PHYS-3466EL – Theoretical Classical Physics

Treats in depth the mathematical methods required to solve various problems in physics and engineering involving scalar fields. The method of separation of variables is used to solve Laplace’s equation, the diffusion equation and the wave equation in various coordinate systems. The Fourier integral theorem is also treated. The course aims to familiarize students with the mathematical methods utilized in senior undergraduate and graduate courses in electromagnetic theory, optics and quantum mechanics. PREREQ: PHYS 2406/7 & MATH 2066/2037 or equiv. Students may not retain credit for both PHYS 3466 & 4467. (lec 3) cr 3
