RLST-2316EL – Cults and New Religious Movements

This course examines the cultural significance of contemporary popular and esoteric religious movements. The teachings and methods of a variety of representative groups are critically assessed. Issues central to the academic study of new religious movements, such as the controversies concerning brainwashing, deprogramming, and violence are explored. The relevance of such movements to emerging understandings of religion in general is also considered. (T) (lec 3) cr 3.
