PHYS-3017EL – Intermediate Electricity and Magnetism

The course employs the formalism of vector calculus to present topics in electrostatics and magnetostatics. The section treating electrostatics includes the electric fields and potential, dielectrics, and polarisation. The application of Gauss’ law, boundary relations at interfaces, and the solution of Poisson’s and Laplace’s equations are covered in depth. The section treating magnetostatics covers the Biot-Savart law, Ampere146s law, Faraday’s and Lenz’s laws. The course includes an initial development of Maxwell’s equations. PREREQ: PHYS 2017 & MATH 2037. (lec 3) cr 3
