A practical study of basic improvisational techniques, the fundamentals of jazz transcription, and preliminary repertoire development. Weekly classroom instruction supplements practical participation in ensemble situations. Students are expected to be registered concurrently in either the Laurentian Jazz Ensemble (Musc 1651, 2651, 3651, 4651) or the Instrumental Chamber Ensemble (MUSC 1621, 2621, 3621, 4621).
