ENGR-2227EL – Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

This course covers the application of laws of thermodynamics to engineering problems related to chemical equilibrium and solutions. Topics include changes in thermodynamic properties of pure substances and their inter-relationships, fugacity and fugacity coefficient, partial molal properties of mixtures, mathematical models for the chemical potential, ideal and non-ideal solutions, activity and activity coefficient, Gibbs-Duhem equation, excess properties of mixtures, criteria for phase equilibria in multicomponent non-reacting systems, vapour-liquid equilibria and solubility, and chemical reaction equilibria. The equilibrium constant and its variation with pressure, temperature, and composition is examined. PREREQ: ENGR 2036. (lec 3, tut 1) cr 3.
