CLAS-3156EL – Poetry and Politics At Rome: Literary “Circles”

This course examines the intersection of literature and politics during the time of Julius Caesar and Augustus. This period of dramatic social and political change saw outstanding poetic production by poets such as Catullus, Horace and Virgil. The course studies the major political figures of the time and the poetic “circles” that surrounded them, combining the study of politics and poetry, history and literature in the period of transition between Republic and Empire. All texts are read in translation. PREREQ: CLAS 1007 or CLAS 2057 or permission of instructor. (lec/sem 3) cr 3.
