CHMI-2032EL – Biochemical Concepts

This course is an introduction to the structure, function and properties of biological molecules. The major classes of biological molecules will be reviewed, with specific examples illustrating their role in living systems. A discussion of intermediate metabolism will then follow, with special attention to bioenergetic aspects. The role of nucleic acides in the storage and decoding of biological information will be examined. The course will conclude with an introduction to the general principles of biotechnology. Throughout the course, an empasis will be placed on the applications of biochemistry in everyday life, as well as on the societal issues raised by the recent advances in biotechnology. PREREQ: CHMI 2031 or equivalent cr 3 This course cannot be used for credit for students enrolled in the Chemistry or Biochemistry programs
